As well as Lucas’ appreciation of the eccentricity and simple humour of his characters, he also entertains with a perceptive and sympathetic version of London life in the early days of the last century. The book was extensively published throughout the years 1913 to 1919. It must have given much needed light relief in that dark period of history.
