In the first thirty years of Victoria's reign, reform established the basis of democratic government, the agrarian and industrial revolutions meant the poor became poorer, the middle class flourished and the aristocracy began to fade. The latter part of the century saw the adverse effects of this growth and success - self satisfaction, belief in the superiority of the British leading to a jingoistic foreign policy and much resting on laurels. It was an incredible period of transistion, investigated, revealed and ultimately attacked by writers, the like of which we shall never see again.
